Written in response to the Daily Post’s Daily Prompt:
Remember the seven cardinal sins? You’re given the serious task of adding a new one to the list — another trait or behavior you find particularly unacceptable, for whatever reason. What’s sin #8 for you? Why?
First students, let’s review those pesky seven deadly sins:
My personal favorite–lust,
followed in order of the sins
to which I’ve succumbed
in order of frequency
from greatest to least:
sloth, (yes, i’m wicked lazy)
pride, (and darned proud of it,)
gluttony (i’ll toast again to that!)
with just a soupçon of
greed, wrath, and envy,
to make me truly interesting.
I nominate intolerance
to take its rightful
place among these
numbered transgressions.
Divisive and shaming,
a barrier to peace;
bigotry makes no
loving concessions.
This poem I really like!

Thank you! It didn’t start out as a poem–sometimes those accidental ones are my favorites.

Intolerance is a great candidate for an eighth cardinal sin. After that, we should have as next in the sequence, arithmetical incompetence as the eleventh cardinal sin.

Perhaps we should rename them ordinal sins. I can feel a whole blog post bubbling up around that….

I would say that it sounds like a good idea to me, but I’m afraid of accusations that I’m encouraging pride.

Encouraging one of the ordinal sins!

I wonder how many ordinal sins there are? If we could get it up to a 365th sin, there’d be one for every day of the year. We’d have to come up with a new one for leap years, though.

I like the way you think. We could just make Feb. 29 a sin free zone.

That’s a good idea. It’s only once every four years, so everybody should be able to manage at least that much virtue.

Yup, I can’t tolerate intolerance. Makes me just as bad, I suppose.
But wilful ignorance, while judging freely, has got to rank somwhere in that list. Quite possibly, at the top.

Intolerance is a little sis of Ignorance. There are more siblings. Most of people are intolerant, and often they have no clue that they are, because, you know, the truth is theirs 😉
