Drought

In these times of drought
We celebrate rain’s promise;
Exult in renewal.

We worship rainfall,
Beg for its munificence,
Make wishes on clouds.

Earnest entreaties,
A worried mother’s prayers,
Please, don’t forsake us!

A Long Way Home

Evil’s here, close by
Its crypt-cold breath taunts hot skin
Watchers on the wall

Before we sleep now
Folded hands beneath bowed heads
Keeps the wolves at bay

In these darkest times
Superstitions comfort us
Lord, hear our prayer

Cadences

steady as you go
rhythmic bass kicking in hard
a call to march forth

drummers know the pull
of the beat’s relentless drive
addictive cadence

rat a tat tat tat
left, right, left, pivot tightly
martial unison

Caustic Creatures

They burn, these harsh words,
Scalding souls and hearts and minds.
Cauterize the wounds!

Affection withheld,
Absence scalds the heart that’s left.
Denies gravity

Your scorched earth tactics
Only make hearts grow fonder
For an unscarred love.

Common Knowledge

Everybody knows
They whisper behind closed doors
Your secret is out

How will you respond
Held head high or bowed in shame
The power is yours

Laugh and make merry
Celebrate indiscretions
Make people wonder

A Little Vine Music

Creeping curving clef

Bold stroke twining garden’s staff

In the key of green

Floral fusion blooms

A visual melody

Music to the eyes

Strains softly entwine

Noted lines in four four time

Pianissimo

Texas Panhandle Haiku

Wander treeless plain

Skirting cactus carefully

Prairie grasses wave

Broad blue Texas sky

Wrangling clouds into corrals

Get along, dogies!

Guardian windmill

Lighthouse without a beacon

Welcoming landmark.

Solitude

Solitude breaks hearts
Yet may heal a thousand wounds
Only time will tell

Darkness cries softly
Find comfort in my warm depths
Embraced by nature

Torch away the night
Bring light to every corner
Lest I die alone.

Ponderable

peace on the table
undiluted, unabridged
indescribable

a taste of freedom
delicious imagining
how sweet would it feel?

God in your wisdom
please grant the balm of world peace
all children deserve.

peace, people.
