E.T.: The Earnest Terrestrial

Among us walk men

Of a most serious bent

Earthlings quite earnest.

Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird.

There also are those

With more frivolous outlooks

Inclined to amuse.

Jim Varney in his role as Ernest T. Bass in Ernest Saves Christmas.

Such as this Ernest.

Who contrary to his name

Was anything but.

Home for the Holiday

Everyone come home;

Home to our sweet Mother Earth.

She craves attention.

She nurtures us all

Gives without thought for her self

As all mothers do.

Happy Earth Day. Do something nice for our mother today.

Marking Time

I. I’m good at that stuff

Marking time like a pro, so

Watch me do nothing.

II. Count on someone else

To worry with the schedule

I’ll be marking time.

III. Who might benefit

From time marked yet unwasted?

Lizards, cats, and me.

Peace, people!

Third World?

I. Third World you might say,

Or developing country

Depends on viewpoint.

II. Looking at my world

With fresh eyes and open heart

What might our guests see?

Saint Augustine, FL

III. Our ruins are fresh

Compared with Antigua’s own;

Centuries apart.

Guatemala

IV. Yet ruins abound

And for many life is hard.

Poverty lays claim.

Guatemala
United States

V. Third World existence

Among First World convenience

Which is most honest?

Birds of Antigua Haiku

Is it possible

That the birds of Antigua

Speak fluent Spanish?

Their songs hold a hint:

Trilling softly rolling rrr’s

And calling !aqui¡

One, I swear sings out

¡Buenos dias, mi hija!

Upon meeting me.

Peace, People!

Fountain of Youth

Twice have I drunk from

The fountain of youth’s waters.

How long must one wait?

Crow’s feet still add depth

To the corners of my eyes,

Fine lines mark my mouth.

Fountain of youth, oh

Where is thy miracle cure?

On sabbatical?

Easter Sunday Poem

Where are the children

Dressed in Easter finery?

Babies grown and gone.

Once there were pretty

Baskets filled, overflowing

With colorful eggs

And sweet chocolate bunnies.

Now we enjoy brunch

With pitchers of mimosas

No children in sight.

No giggles, no smiles

Just videos across miles

Better than nothing,

But my poor heart

Aches with emptiness and love

Miss you, children.

Notice Jason’s mullet–he thought he needed the haircut to be a better wrestler. Ashley didn’t want anyone to see her snaggle-toothed smile, thus the firmly closed lips.

My beautiful almost grown up children during their year together as students at The University of Kansas. Now they’re both parents. Sigh.

Peace, People!

Dental Visit

Open wide, don’t flinch

Now you’ll feel a little pinch

Then only numbness.

You call that a pinch?

Sonofabitch I’m wounded

Grievously woonthed.

Thit, now my tongue ith athleep.

Thit, thit, thit, thit, thit.

Here’s one of my all-time favorite episodes of the Carol Burnett show.

Codes By Which To Live Haiku

In response to The Daily Post’s prompt:

I. Do unto others

As you would have others do

Unto you my child.

“The Golden Rule” Norman Rockwell, 1942

II. Be kind, consider

Every living person

Equal unto you.

III. Keep your heart open

To the possibilities

Your soul aware.

IV. Allow your self to

Love unconditionally

Live without regret.

Peace, People!

Rousing chorusing begins
Syncopated frogs.

Your beautiful song of night.
Nature’s lullaby.

Signal another day’s done
Melodic strains rise.
