Thunderstorm on the 4th

is there anything
sadder on July the 4th
than a thunderstorm?

unused, the fireworks
await clear skies for glory
and rockets’ red glare.

distant crack sounds near
weather or firecracker’s boom?
bombs bursting in air.

Peace, people!

Patriotic

Wave your flags up high
democracy reigns supreme
true red, white, and blue.

It is not perfect
this country we claim with love
flawed and proud of it.

Our founding fathers
wise beyond comprehension
knew we’d need to grow.

The Constitution
holds no religion as prime
freedom of worship.

Freedom from worship
as citizens we decide
God bless America!

Door

In response to the weekly photo challenge, Door:

Mysteries await

Beyond this green wooden door;

Antigua beckons.

Serious Man at Barnes and Noble

it’s easy to spot
the serious gentleman
he’s notating joyce.

a pen in one hand
he scribbles in the margins
frowning all the while.

James Joyce’s handwriting

can he not see that
frowning creases his forehead?
oh, i suppose not.

Cat Dreams

chittering softly
sleeping kitten stirs in dreams
paws prepare to pounce.

who knows what she hunts
behind tightly shuttered eyes?
mew! she cries, sweet dreams.

In Case You Forget

Yellow winged fairy
perched gently on buttercups
delicate beauty.

Loveliness knows not
the emotions it evokes
like butterfly wings.

We watched a swallowtail yesterday evening. It was engaged in a frolic we could not understand, flirting with drops of water remaining after a thunderstorm.
The darned thing was lovely in every sense of the word–brilliantly yellow, graced with wispy wings edged in black, graceful in flight–yet completely oblivious to our admiration, and unaware of its own beauty.
Don’t forget, we are all beautiful. You are beautiful.

Peace, people!

Ride Haiku

rising asphalt road
curving, banked, accelerate
grooving in the zone.

Peace, people!

Opulent

blue green opal tucked
within rings of solid gold
october’s gemstone.

fiery flashes
sparkling illumination
bright dalliances.

delicate wire twists
displaying earth’s opulence
captured in one stone.

slipped on slim finger
a ring for all the ages
smooth and elegant.

My Heart

When you call my name
my lonely heart holds its breath
afraid of loving.

So whisper the words
tell me you need me always
but don’t say my name.

for names hold power
as every lover knows
a twist in the gut.

Peace, people!

Cat On The Loose

 I’m a bad ass cat
poised for adventure and fun.
watch me as I pounce!

Ill let you pet me
my bad self craves attention
man, just keep it real.

Don’t turn your back, Jack,
I’ll get you every time
I’m a bad ass cat.
