Coping

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m full of anxiety and can barely pay attention to anything other than news from Ukraine.

When I find my mind consumed to the point of being unable to sleep or walk in a straight line or any other normal activity, I pull out my kindle and read. That works for a while.

On the whole I’m napping too much, and last night I thought I might be having a heart attack. And my country isn’t even under siege. At least not from outside our borders.

So, what works for you? How are you coping?

  1. How am I coping? I’m old; I’ve lived through a lot of history and read a whole lot more. This situation isn’t unique; our old world has seen a lot of conflict — and may see a lot more before the Judgment Day.

I suppose WW1 was a surprise –“The shot heard round the world”–and so was the Stock Market Crash. No one foresaw the Great Depression would last ten years, but WW2 was slow in arriving. People had several years to see and dread it coming — though they tried not to. I was born while the Korean War was raging, have lived through the Cold War, the Russian invasion of (was it) Czechoslovakia (?), the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, 9/11, the Gulf War, the war in Afghanistan, the fear of nuclear war re: President Trump versus the Korean leader. People were holding their breath then — now who even remembers?

I realize the media feeds people the most sensational version because fear sells. We limit our exposure to current news. Also, I’ve personally lived through breast cancer (1980) and leukemia (CLL, 2013-present). Thinking you’re dying puts life in perspective like nothing else can. Moreover, I read Psalm 46:1-7 and am comforted that God will make a way for those who put their trust in him, no matter what comes.

  2. Reading, of course; but a website The Tapping Solution is a big help , practice of tapping on meridian sites, head, face, hands, collar bone while meditating and acknowledging what I’m so stressed about. Prayer and faith that I don’t hold the world in MY hands is the real key. I’ll try to send a link to the special Tapping session to cover the people of Ukraine with safety and peace to the world.

  3. I’m not a professional in any way, yet I can’t help but wonder if the reactions you are having aren’t tied to the experiences with death you’ve been facing, and the process of grief you are coping with. be gentle with yourself, talk with others, maybe write more- not dedicated work but journal type writing just to put feelings and emotions out there rather than inside…You are a strong lady, but perhaps turn off the news as well.

      1. I think everyone can empathize with world situations in their own way based on their own experiences, just like with Covid, and maybe even their own cultural heritage. The reality though, short of giving funds or working within your community on related projects is that most of us really aren’t able to “do” much for these people and their country right now. The point is, watching the news on a constant loop won’t benefit you or them and I think it only makes many of us feel more helpless and frightened and worried.
