Its under the advanced settings for the individual post. That way you can override your default posting format.

I wish I knew! Under discussion settings I have checked to allow comments on new articles. It says in parentheses that these settings can be overridden for individual articles; but I’ve never found the way to do that. I have an old “theme” that isn’t offered any more . . .

I only want them turned off for one post. Call me a coward, but I really dread the comments that tomorrow’s post might elicit.

I didn’t know either – but I gather WP has a tendency to do it for you.

In edit mode, settings, document tab, toward bottom under Discussion, there is a check box , so you, UNCHECK, Allow Comments (you might also uncheck Allow Pingbacks and Trackbacks).
