If you had to choose between living in a world filled with hyper-intelligent spiders or one ruled by PhD level octopuses which would it be?
Would negotiating with arachnids be preferable to appealing to a mollusk’s better nature?
Why, you might ask, am I entertaining such thoughts?
I just finished Adrian Tchaikovsky’s, Children of Ruin, the sequel to his groundbreaking novel, Children of Time, that’s why.
Good sci-fi should force readers to contemplate the imponderables, to think beyond previously constructed boundaries, and Tchaikovsky has given me more to contemplate than my little brain can handle right now. My mind is blown, and that’s a good thing.

I’m not sure that’s a choice I want to make! I loath spiders and everything about them, not because they are spiders but because they crawl and skitter and yes, even jump. Oh, did I mention that I find it also incredibly unpleasant and upsetting to walk into one dangling from my ceiling…
The octopus option may be the better choice.
On a side note-have you followed any of the Netflix series The OA? This 2nd season has a creepy and amazing octopus as a key player.

I have had my mind rearranged by Tchaikovsky’s books. He’s an entomologist who has written at least a dozen sci-fi tomes. And while I’m still not crazy about spiders they’d probably be more reliable co-workers in space than an octopus would be. In a perfect world, though, the only one I’d be stuck in space with would be Han Solo.
I’ve not watched the OA! My husband and I don’t have Netflix. (Gasp!) we’re practically Stone Age around here.

Hahaha! I don’t HATE spiders, but when I walk into a web unawares I am liable to colorfully curse their lineage all the way back to the garden of eden.

We have banana spiders here. They are really big and spin webs that are huge. I’ve walked into one and almost had a heart attack.

It is quite good. Tchaikovsky is one of the best sci-fi writers out there. He’s fun to follow on Twitter, as well.
