Hot Toddy Night

I’m not a whisky drinker, but I must admit that when I come down with a cold, as I seem to have done yesterday, a hot toddy gives me a reason to live on. Even the act of making a hot toddy is comforting.

Hot Toddy

1 1/2 fluid ounces whiskey

1 T honey

3 whole cloves

1 cinnamon stick

1 slice lemon

1 pinch ground nutmeg

Pour the honey, boiling water, and whiskey into a mug. Spice it with the cloves and cinnamon, and put in the slice of lemon. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes so the flavors can mingle, then sprinkle with a pinch of nutmeg before serving.

I’m not sure if it’s a cure, but a hot toddy makes me feel a whole lot better and is much more palatable than over the counter liquid cold medicines.

Peace, people!

  1. Best of luck with the wretched cold young Leslie. I gave up whisky several decades ago as – as with my father before me – it changes my character completely, so when I get a cold it has to be tedious Lemsip I turn to!

  2. I’d always been turned off from the idea of a hot toddy, because my dad said they included butter. Blargh! Butter in a drink? I also don’t recall any mention of spices. Yours sounds much better!

Hope you’re feeling better. If not, I hope that little bottle of JD holds out long enough.

  3. If nothing else, a hot toddy ensures a restful night’s sleep. I remember my mom giving me them when I had mono in my early 20s. One caveat: Mom was a nurse and told us the story of a fellow nurse who gave her husband a hot toddy and he died. Cause and effect? Probably not, but something to think about. Hope you feel better!
