The Colt’s Concern
Words by Leslie Noyes
I had a dream last night of galloping like the wind, of leaving your warm side and running with new friends.
Scary, it was, yet exhilarating, too, the further I ran the harder it was to find my way back to you.
You dreamed, my colt, of life as it should someday be. The time will come when you no longer have a need for me.
How will I know when the time is right to strike out on my own, a colt no more, instead a mighty stallion?
There’ll surely be false starts before you venture out; that day’s not set in stone, and we’re never free from doubt.
If it’s all the same to you, I’ll hang out here awhile longer, let my legs lengthen and my heart beat stronger.
Sweet son, stay until you’re ready in your body and your soul. I will gladly keep you close and proudly watch you grow.

That’s a sweet poem. I’ll check out the blog you linked to.

What an interesting layout for this delightful poem to go along with an equally delightful image. Is this called a narrative poem? I really enjoyed the conversation, so apt with kids going off to college this time of year.

Hmm! I never thought of it as a narrative poem, but perhaps it could be classified as such. I don’t know much about poetry–just what I feel like writing. My friend, Julie Powell’s photography inspires me to write.

A poem by any other name will sound as sweet. 🙂 I don’t know about poetic form much either. Just wondering.

I only know haiku and sonnet. I’m not much good at crafting either of those! Most of mine I just call “rambling!” 😉

This one is FAR from rambling. I loved the structure of the back and forth conversation and the rhyme within each couplet but not at the end. I enjoyed the content, and the structure made it even more of a delight because I felt like I had uncovered a secret.

And John Wayne can be your mascot, or is it Waylon Jennings…….

Either John or Wayne would work. Or Richard Harris! Remember, MacArthur Park is melting in the dark?
