Chasm

in the soul of man
there exists a chasm
deeper than it is wide,
and it is very wide indeed
from one’s lofty northern perch
the southern side cannot be viewed

stones cast in vertically disappear,
become ghosts of old yearnings
intense feelings grown cold
free falling for eternity
to fathomless depths
in the soul of man

Tunnel

i’ve been gone
for a long time
my mind
unhinged
tainted
exacerbated
by darkness and
troublesome doubt.

as the return trip
proves difficult
will i
prove
capable
sustainable
equal to the
test of wills?

light there awaits
punishment or peace
burning
bruising
controlling
welcome counter
to vapid refrain
ready or not, i come.

Dark

would you clap in delight
when the lights go out,
or would you cower in darkness
afraid to take a single step?

would you cry in despair
believing all was lost,
or pass the time in reflection
recalling the blessings of night?

would you dance in place
swaying with abandon
or collapse in a heap of despair
forever changed by the absolute?

After I published this post a friend and fellow writer, Janie Christie Heniford, pointed out that the quote attributed to Galileo is instead from a poem (below) by Sara Williams. Thanks Janie!

Though my soul may set in darkness,
It will rise in perfect light.
For I have loved the stars too fondly
To be fearful of the night.–Sara Williams

Being Alive

Living in this world
takes concentration and verve
not to mention nerve.

Pain abounds in life
miseries without an end
oh humanity!

Yet deep within us
exists enduring beauty
sweetly transcendent.

Ocean

Ocean

Messages of anger,
Hate, and despair
Tucked in blown glass
Riding atop
Waves of arguments:
He said!
But they were!
You should!
All rebuffed with
Words of hope,
Love, and peace.
Wrested from the
Brink of anguish
Cresting swells of
Sweet, sweet
Acceptance for
Ourselves and others,
Our lives and loves,
Without a care for
What any might
Think or say.
