My Traffic Stop

Great piece by Jan Wilberg. You should read it.

I was on my way to a 6:00 p.m. meeting and came flying down the hill on to our city’s lake drive like I had done 10,000 times. I was thinking about the day, bright and sunny, and the water, riled a little by the wind. I love Lake Michigan in all its glory and it’s a daily thing – whenever I see it I revel in it. What a beautiful place. And so I came flying down that hill in my old 2005 Thunderbird just enjoying being alive.

And then I saw the lights flashing behind me.

Officer: Do you know how fast you were going, young lady? (I am 70. A decent-looking 70 but still 70.)

Me: Well, probably over 40 (guessing because I had no idea, I was looking at the lake after all and not my speedometer).

Officer: 49. 19 miles over the speed limit.

It was hot on the bus. Especially if we were parked waiting for our friends to emerge from under the bridges or the woods where they were living. The wait was never too long since they knew we were coming – Street Angels shows up in our mini-bus every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. We hand out hot meals, bag lunches and a host of other things – batteries, underwear, blankets. soap, razors, flashlights, t-shirts, jeans, and socks, many socks. You see, when you are homeless and your socks are worn out and dirty, you throw them away. Washing clothes takes a whole level of storage and wherewithal – it doesn’t work when you carry what you own on your back.

A woman shows up at the bus door. She looks exactly the same as when I saw her two weeks before. She is self-sufficient looking, the type of woman who…

Curiosity and the Door

This is one of my weirder pieces, but I do love this green door. I took this while in La Antigua de Guatemala, for my niece’s wedding.

nananoyz's avatarPraying for Eyebrowz

Behind this door lies

Madness, maybe, or magic.

Only time may tell.

Green doorway beckons,

Oft polished tiles pave the way

Stay wary, be wise.

From ether appeared

Long-limbed, staff-carrying Mage.

My breath caught; exhaled.

“Magician, tell me

Secrets from beyond grave’s door.”

“Those must wait,” he said,

“For your own demise,

Your journey beyond life’s pale

Do not hurry there!”

Patience, I have none.

Again I begged the wizard,

“A hint, please of what’s to come!”

Wickedly, he smiled,

“Child, ask me no more!

Twice have I refused your bid

Thrice will serve you not!”

But eager was I

To know secrets dark and deep

Again I bade him,

“Answer me! ‘Tis truth I seek!”

Rakishly grinned he,

“You should have escaped, my dear,

Now face your nightmare!”

Force flew from his hand,

A blinding light soon followed

To my knees I fell

Trembling with fear

Awestruck by his…

A Broken Heart

And again.

nananoyz's avatarPraying for Eyebrowz

I can point out the cracks,

The places that never quite heal

This one from Newtown

Another from a Texas church

And all those in between

Etchings on this old heart,

Dinged by each death,

Pitted by the greed of lawmakers

Broken by the callous, rote responses,

Their thoughts and prayers

Who will take this cup from me?

Who wants this scarred heart?

I’m tired of carrying the damage around

Of wounds that don’t mend

And people who don’t care.

Wedding at Hobbitenango

I didn’t get to attend the royal wedding. Perhaps my invitation was lost in the mail. However, I did get to attend a wedding in Guatemala several years ago. That’s pretty near the same thing.

Those who read my blog posts on a regular basis (God bless you faithful few) know that I’ve been in Antigua, Guatemala, these past few days to celebrate the marriage of my beautiful niece Hanna and her handsome beau, Beto.

On Friday, April 11, family, friends, and a handful of complete strangers joined Beto and Hanna on a mountain far above Antigua for one of the most joyous occasions I’ve ever had the pleasure to witness.

The bride. 😊 Her dad is the proud-looking man just behind Hanna.

Cutting the wedding cake never looked quite so romantic before.

Mother of the bride, Hanna, Father of the bride and lovely niece Lauren.

My gorgeous niece, Claire, sister of the bride.

This is me standing in the doorway of Hobbitenango.

Hobbitenangois a tavern and hostel owned by my new nephew and his business partners. The buildings that make up Hobbitenango are…

Oldie #2: Close Encounters of the Bear Kind

I’ve been seeing this video of a bear climbing into a tree right beside a hunter who is perched in a hunting blind. The guy is remarkably calm.

Here’s how I behaved in a similar situation.

Our bear wasn’t this cute, or this small, or waving at us…. Every now and then I wake up in a cold sweat remembering this day.

And then Mike Pence says: ‘It’s time to wrap it up’… 😃😆to Robert Mueller 😂😆🤣😅🙄

Great piece by alotfromlydia.wordpress.com. Love her term for pence: “omniphobe”

alotfromlydia's avatarA lot from Lydia

Radical Christian omniphobe, Vice President Mike H(HeKnew) Pence, whose indictment dodging game plan has been to fly under the radar, is trying a new strategy, which is to call Michael T(TrumpNeverMetHim) Cohen’s scrutinized business relationships a ‘private matter.

That is likely a run on sentence, so I’ll re-phrase it in a different run on sentence:

Robert H(HoldMyBeer)Mueller’s investigation, into Russian interference in the 2016 election, has bled into multiple connected crimes. Michael S(SoScrewed) Cohen, whose style of lawyering is thuggish extortion,

has been busted taking bribes from corporations who have since directly benefited from Donald J(JustKiddingDon’tWannaBePotus)Trump’s policy changes. At the risk of repeating myself, (as if anyone is reading), I’ll only say: banks, Fortune 500 companies, Russian oil, internet, drug companies… I’ll stop there, my thumbs are cramping up.

Back to omniphobe Mike Y(YouCan’tDoThatWithYourUterus)) Pence. He has inadvertently shown his cards…

What Would You Do?

Studly Doright came through his surgery yesterday with flying colors. He’s quite proud of the fact that, according to the surgeon, his was quite easily the largest extrusion he’d ever seen. Studly is one competitive man.

Of course, as I drove him home from the hospital last evening I almost pushed him out the door of the car for his constant criticism of my driving:

“Why are you in this lane?”

“You’re going too slow.”

“Slow down” (this said immediately following the previous statement.)

“Don’t let him cut you off!”

“Why’d you take this route? Monroe is faster.”

I pointed out that I’d been successfully navigating for many years, and that I’ve driven many miles quite well without him.

“It’s a wonder,” he said.

What’s a wonder is that I didn’t withhold his pain meds last night. It’s good to be in control.

Peace, people.
