I’m an author. I write and sell books for fun and profit. And while I may never get rich from my endeavors, I’m doing okay. Really. It surprises me, too.
But some days I’m floored by the way things work. You see, I went to buy some cards—birthday and Christmas greetings for friends and relatives, and when I averaged the cost of a card it came to just slightly more than the cost of my books on kindle. And not a great deal less than the paperback versions.
Maybe I’m in the wrong business. But then again, I’m just not witty enough or sentimental enough to make a living creating Happy Birthday cards. I guess I’ll keep plugging along.
Peace, people.
It’s not a competition, especially if you enjoy the process

Oh, I know. I just find it interesting. A writer friend commented one day that he’d bought a journal—not even leather bound—that cost $17.00.
He was amazed at all the empty pages and thought, maybe next time he’d just skip all the writing and just create a journal.

I don’t know if it will make you feel better, but my wild guess would be: from the price of each card sold the writer/poet gets maybe 5%, an artist a bit more, a printer maybe 8%, the publisher and store each about 30% and the rest pays for shipping, handling, advertising, & returns. But since there are thousands of cards sold, it adds up. If authors could sell that many books…

What I didn’t mention is that I only make a percentage of the book price. 30% or 70% depending on format. I actually make the bulk of my income from Kindle Unlimited! That never fails to amaze me.

That is interesting. Still, I borrow most of my books from Kindle Unlimited, so it shouldn’t surprise me that a lot of readers do. And once the system is set up if books on a topic are to BUY or BORROW, I almost always go for the ones I can BORROW.

My books just hit five million page reads on Kindle Unlimited. That absolutely blows my mind.
