Fishing With the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

My experiences as a fisherman have all been lacking in excitement. And that’s fine with me. I have no desire to actually catch a fish; although, I do enjoy sitting in the shade by a peaceful lake with a fishing pole in one hand and a good beer in the other.

If any fish come to pay a call I just say, “No thanks, I’m a vegan.”

For those horrified that I might actually harm an innocent fish, please don’t fret. It seems one needs a hook and bait in order to land a fish. The pole alone isn’t sufficient to the task.

I do like songs about fishing, though. Well, one song anyway. I was out driving around this afternoon, listening to the Garth Brooks channel on SiriusXM, when my favorite Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song was played. The song, “Fishing in the Dark,” might not even be about fishing. Wink, wink. I have a feeling it’s a little tongue in cheek, and that makes me love it even more.

Peace, people!

  1. Lol, that ad vert is astonishing. Catch yourself a mermaid sure enough. I used to go fishing with my dad when i was wee. He was on the town council and one of the ‘perks’ was that they got to come and fish at Lintrathen reservoir which was a beautiful place. I could take a pal, he often brought a crowd , and while they were fishing we’d just run the banks all day. But often I got in the boat and he showed me how to cast a line and all. He also taught me to row and 9 times out of 10 up there that was my job, to row the quite big boat. Always loved a Saturday there.

      1. Dad was never a big fisher. I think he may have learned when he lived where we are now for a bit as a boy. Cos I honestly cannot think where else, growing up in the slums, he’d have learned. But after his mum died he lived in a house here for a few years right across from the harbour and he did like to get back here with bait and a line on a kind of shuttle, no rod. And he knew how to do that. The Town Council had their own pretty beat up boathouse and boat at Lintrathen, so once he was on that, all you had to do was book it out. The next thing he was off getting rods and stuff and he taught how to cast and all the rest. He was quite into it for a bit at that point with all the gear and I think sometimes he maybe did go elsewhere with folks who fished. But latterly for a long time he never did it.
