Encounter

“Pray for me,” she said

Tracks of tears in her makeup

Scabbed tracks on her arms

We prayed together

While shoppers bustled about

Her hands grasping mine

Out of my depth there

Unbalanced by her need

One of us could drown

      1. I tried to write it as prose, but I got too emotional. Oddly enough my bastardized version of haiku helped me process the event without getting bogged down in tears. She was a pretty tragic person, and I wasn’t up to the task of helping her. 😢

  1. Indeed jolly fine Leslie and having read the comments, pretty deep and I sometimes think the best emotional writing is the one where you don’t get bogged down. You are already showing what lies beneath by distancing yourself paradoxically.

      1. Leslie, to quote the naff but oh so true line in I dreamed a dream, Les Miz. ‘there are storms we cannot weather,’ it is not turning the other cheek, it is that sometimes we don’t know where to begin. When it comes to conveying any of that you did a damn good job and sometimes the best way to convey the hell of it all is to understate in the hope someone can pick that up and realise there is another world out there. The thing is, even if you bled your heart out there, some smart ass would have their say in a way that would have left you thinking, WHAT? I just always think in life…and I have worked in and been in some very difficult situs– have humanity. And you did. That is what counts. x
