When I was in Texas in early October my son, grandson, and I spent part of one morning scoping out estate sales in Dallas. Fortunately I was living out of a suitcase, otherwise there’s no telling what I’d have bought. Yes, I know I could’ve gone to a pack and mail place and have purchases delivered to Doright Manor, but I didn’t want to spend money on postage.
Early in the day I bought a nice tennis bracelet, and it looked like that would be it for me. I looked at some nicely priced, nearly new designer bags, but honestly, my cup (and my closet) runneth over when it comes to purses and such.
At the final sale we went to I found this intriguing silver piece, and my son bought it for me as a birthday gift:
Here it is with the dome up:
And with the little plate removed:
Finally, a close up of an attached holder. That was what gave away this whatchamacallit, in my book.
Well, that and the assistance of an informed collector. It needs a good polishing, but its beauty shines through.
What do you think it is? I probably won’t laugh at any guesses. No promises.
Peace, people!
It looks like some type of incense burner. Maybe something used in the Jewish faith? I could be totally wrong…just a guess.

I’d wondered that, as well.

I think it’s something Jewish? Is that the Star of David? Something to do with candles?lol

Wow! I agree with Frazier up above – it looks like an incense burner and it has what looks like a star of David on it too! Either way it’s pretty and very interesting.

I don’t know what it is but reckon on eBay you would make a good few quid – of rather, dollars. ~ George

Hallmark? It’s probably worth a bundle if you can date it.

There are numbers etched into the bottom, but nothing like a silversmith’s mark. It also appears that the base has been welded on—perhaps it had broken off at some point and was reattached.

A repair might not blight its value too much. I’m into reselling to add a constant income to my good money music related hits that are great but spasmodic so these things fascinate me – especially when I hear the word ‘silver’. I’m not saying sell it, because it was a present, but it’s good to know if you’ve got something special. Best of luck ~ George

I agree with the Jewish religious object. Looks like a Star of David inside?

It’s a Citron Etrog Fruit box. It’s used to hold pieces of fruit during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. 🙂 – Marty

The word samovar came to mind as soon as I saw this. Strange because I don’t know what a samovar is! So I googled it.A samovar is a heated metal container traditionally used to heat and boil water in Russia. Looking at the photo’s, I don’t think this is one of those. Incense burner perhaps? Whatever it is it is very pretty to look at.

Samovar is a great word, right? You’re right, though, it doesn’t seem likely that this piece is a samovar.
