Alone

If someone had told me
when I was sixteen
and insecure
that I’d come to enjoy
my own company more
than that of others
I’d have laughed.
Loud and long and clear.

But here I am perched
on the deck, watching
the fish jump and the birds
swoop. There’s not another
human in sight. And that’s
the best part. Just me, the
lake, the fish and my
fondest memories.

  1. While I do appreciate your well put sentiments I shy both people and the pastoral. I find it easiest to get alone in the big city. The darker the bar, the brighter my mood.

      1. It’s not the crowds, it’s the incongruity of being alone among the many. And a maneuver to better psychological managed this post-ironic social political era. The latter being a real thing. ( And of huge import during the coming election cycle.) The Millennials’ growing dialectic concerning a need for public and personal authenticity as opposed to individualist stand apart and cynical cool. Think about your BFF Hilary and her, “it takes a village,” versus Donald’s, it takes but a say anything strongman strategy. And your welcome, Painted Toes.
