Second Time Around
Tell us about a book you can read again and again without getting bored — what is it that speaks to you?
Generally when I’ve finished reading a book I’m done with it, regardless of how wonderful or well-written it was. There are two books, however, that I’ve read multiple times and will read again: Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Stephen King’s The Stand.
To Kill a Mockingbird should be mandatory reading for every citizen of this country. If one ever doubted the existence of white privilege Ms. Lee spells it out in this tale of racism and heroism in a small southern town.
King’s The Stand is the most frightening book I’ve ever read. Good and evil literally battle for dominion of the earth in this post-apocalyptic thriller. Often I joke that I read portions of it with my eyes closed.
In both cases movies have been made from these novels, and I believe a remake of The Stand is in the works. By all means watch the films, but the books are worthy of reading and reading again.
Note: I’ve also read all of the Harry Potter books numerous times, but I’d already broken the prompt’s rule and didn’t want to go to Daily Prompt prison.
Peace, people.

I love “reading parts of a book with your eyes closed”. I might try it, as blood and gore has often stopped me from reading interesting stuff 🙂

I think I read The Shining with my eyes closed and my fingers in my ears.

Haha, horrifying wasn’t it? I still shudder today. However, Pulp Fiction I remembered “hating all that blood”, but I saw it on TV last night – I found the situations, characters, dialogue and visuals brilliant – at least the eyes open parts 🙂 So go figure.

The Stand was, is, and always shall be my favorite book! Something prophetic about that story and the characters. Still think I’m getting the Tripps every time I get the sniffles! On Feb 5, 2016 9:02 AM, “Praying for Eyebrowz” wrote:

Man, I always think that, too. Damned book made me paranoid.

The Stand is the first Stephen King book a long time ago. It is by far the best of his books in my opinion, as it truly brings the reader into a believable apocalyptic scenario, which allows Evil to come looking for dominance over the planet…
It is a chilling read, that has never been justice in any of the movies, as the book’s ability to fuel your imagination with nightmare scenarios cannot be topped by anything that Hollywood offers!

I agree completely. Hopefully Hollywood will get it right this time!

I have so many unread books that I don’t read any twice, unless I’ve forgotten I’ve already read them. Last year I did this with a biography of the Labour politician, Lord George Brown. I’d almost finished it before I came across the bookmark I had left in it the first time

It is King’s best, deepest novel.
