success and failure
fraternal twins fed by angst,
seeking approval.

no consolation
in the silence or applause
they sought acceptance.

clothed in afterthought
lingering at shadow’s edge
no acknowledgement.

    1. I wrote this after giving the opening speech for my class’s reunion last weekend. During the hearty applause I noticed that my long time best friend was sitting stoically. Her approval would have meant so much, but she’s married to a big shot in the Texas Tea Party and I’m a rather progressive voter.

      1. I’m sorry to hear about your best friend’s reaction. I tend to be rather liberal in my political views too so I know it can lead to a bit of awkwardness at times with more conservative friends. It’s great that you got hearty applause from everyone else, though.

      2. I guess I wondered why her approval meant so much. My husband, who is rather stingy with praise, was pretty effusive that night. But her lack of approval stung. Dammit.

      3. It is a pity, especially if it was based on politics since that sounds irrelevant to the situation. I mean, it’s not like you were giving a campaign speech for Hillary Clinton. 😦
