For awhile I gave up wine and took up the drinking of beer. But the really good beer is so high in calories and my waistline was growing at such an incredible rate that I had to follow Nancy Reagan’s advice and just say no.
For about ten minutes I considered completely eschewing alcohol in the pursuit of clean living. I actually went two weeks with nothing more potent than a splash of mouthwash. Unfortunately Listerine doesn’t come in a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Chardonnay.
For the first time since beginning my blog I stumbled headlong into a mild case of writer’s block. Then I ran across a really profound quote:

I wasn’t doing it right! I was writing sober and left with absolutely nothing to edit.
Good old Papa. He also said:
Needless to say I’ve begun having a single glass of wine in the evenings. My doctor says it’s fine. I’m finding things to write about again. Life is good.

I once, by necessity I might add, was forced to give up both wine and beer for one whole year while I was losing 7 million stone in weight and attempting to take myself out of the diabetes type 2 zone. Mission accomplished long, long since but what a boring year it was!

I’m afraid for my weight I might need to do that. I get depressed just pondering it.

America saved my life! All those years back when the diabetes kicked in I found online a high complex carbohydrate veggie diet from California that makes weight loss easy and controls sugar levels. I have ben on it 13 years now and enjoy every last thing I eat. Easy to maintain a weight on this one as well as have my treasured evening red wine. Oh, and Paul McCartney helped a bit, ‘If it’s got a face I don’t eat it’…I follow his rule in that regard! Best of luck…my case by the way was one of ‘very fat’ 19stone; a decade or more on, 11 stone now.

Do you get Quorn in the US. High in fibre; low in calories; zero fat. I know in essence it’s processed yet not in the way normal processed food is made. Absolutely fantastic to live on for a few months as the weight falls off! They say the world could easily be fed on this. Certainly helped me in the early days, and I’ll lay a bet you don’t know what being fat…as in really fat is young Leslie! http://www.quorn.co.uk/

I’d never heard of Quorn! Must do some research! And you’re right. I’m not fat, but could be if I’m not careful. I’m 5’8″ tall and for most of my life I was too thin. But now, ach! Everything I eat goes straight to my middle. And apparently my cholesterol is way too high, so I have to get serious about eating healthy. Seems my dr. only wants to write prescriptions for this, that, and the other.

Japanese tofu (it’s rather firm unlike a lot of other tofu) lightly fried on a bed of couscous with an artichoke salad? Perhaps a chilled Chardonnay to go with it?

I’m heading into my 9th decade (gasp, how did that sneak up on me?), and I’m darned if I’ll give up my wine.

You’ve got it all figured out – wine in moderation. Mostly. We live in Napa Valley and our first year hear was a bit excessive. We drank wine in volumes every day. Now, we nurture and appreciate it. Check out our wine country blog: http://www.topochinesvino.com.

I will check it out. A Napa Valley vacation is on my bucket list.

No reason to keep it to a bucket list. It’s a very accessible place.

Well, we live in Florida. Our grandkids live in Texas and Illinois, so most vacations are spent in those two locales. Some day my husband will retire and we’ll make it California.
