The Test

I have a test scheduled this morning. In fact, I’m here, thirty minutes early because I was afraid I’d get lost in the maze of hospital corridors. In some places, one must go down to go up, or maybe that’s only due to a screw up on my part.

My fingernails could use a trim. And some polish. That’s what I think as I sit waiting to be called back. They’re going to think I’m a doddering old lady. Maybe I won’t need the test to confirm it.

It’s a test of my memory, you see. Lately I’ve done a few things that have made me wonder. Made me nervous, in fact. So I scheduled a test with a neurologist.

And I haven’t known how to study for it. I thought of googling the Pythagorean theorem or the number of degrees in a triangle, but I doubt those questions will appear on this test. More’s the pity. I think I remember those well enough, even without google.

Peace, people.

  1. My husband was hospitalized for this a few weeks ago–transitional memory loss. It is scary when your husband of 40+ years looks at you and says, ‘what’s your name?’ This happened before a few months ago and we were told if it happened again, head to the ER. After a 2-day stay, all tests came back just fine. We are awaiting a neuro appt as we speak. I am anxious to hear about this test you are having.

    1. That had to be scary! In my case, I had three weird episodes. 1) I couldn’t remember how to operate the cruise control in my car. The car I use EVERY day. I keep trying to punch the button instead of toggling it. 2) In my way home from Tallahassee I realized I had no idea where I was. I’d missed my turn, driven about 10 miles on a different road, and then was uncertain about how to find my way back. 3) I literally forgot to merge onto a busy interstate. I’d gotten onto the d trance ramp and caught sight of something in the road below the interstate and forgot I needed to merge with traffic until I was about ten yards from hitting the guardrail. That’s the one that made me call the doctor.

      1. Leslie–that is my worst nightmare–that something like this happens when my husband is driving. I hope your doctor is able to let you know something. Husband had EKG, EEG, MRI, CT, labs–he’s perfectly normal. Until he has no idea what my name is.

  2. I had the same test. I was referred by my doc who gave me a mini-test first and when the results came back referred me to the Memory Disorders Clinic at TMH. I was so blue after the referral that my memory became worse, sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. When you go back in a couple of weeks to hear the results and what they mean, I will be happy to go with you. Sit outside the door, or hold your hand. I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. You are an amazing person. Hold on. That is what the test is going to say. Oh! And I left a whole page of math undone. Deep breath.
