Friends, I debated long and hard about sharing this information on my blog, but my thoughts are all tangled up right now and maybe this will help me sort them out.
As many of you know, our grandson had an appendectomy last Monday. He wasn’t improving as expected and they took him back into surgery on Thursday to have a look around. They drained some fluid and inserted a drainage tube. Afterwards he felt better and we thought, “yay!”
Then this morning my daughter received a call from the surgeon. They’d found something called a neuroendocrine tumor in Garrett’s appendix. And it was cancerous. That damned word.
So, right now they’re letting Garrett’s post-op swelling subside. They’ll do some diagnostic tests to see what other organs might be affected, but it’s a given that they’ll remove his gallbladder in a procedure yet to be scheduled.
Prayers are welcomed. Good vibes appreciated. Our Garrett is a super smart, exceptionally kind young man bound for great things. We’re going to tackle this damned word and beat it.

My husband and I both have the “C” word. All I can say is they have made such strides in treatment that is life-saving. Keeping your Garrett in my prayers, Leslie.

Praying is was small enough that they got all of it with the appendix and it hasn’t metastasized. Hugs from afar❤️

Leslie the world of medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds. I know you and your family are scared and worried but please know this, cancer research and treatment is now quite extraordinary and thousands of lives are saved every day. Your grandson will get excellent care. He will heal and respond to treatment and survive this ordeal. Have hope. If I am still alive two years after being diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer and I’m over 70, then your sweet boy will respond well and heal.
The continued advancements in cancer treatments grows daily. Last Wednesday I began a new form of chemo that stops regrowth of cancer cells. That along with my regular chemo to kill the existing cancer is the latest in my type of treatment . Each cancer has a specialized program and treatment. . Your grandson will have so many life saving options. Take heart. He will survive this battle. Sending love and prayers to you snd your family. ❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

Thank you for this. Your story gives me great hope. They are transferring Garrett to a larger hospital with a great oncology department as soon as he’s able to be moved. He’s pretty fragile right now. We appreciate your prayers and celebrate your successes.

How horrible! Dealing with cancer at any age is so traumatic, but it always seems so much harder when it hits someone young like this. My all future prognosis be positive and this is one ugly little blip in his life path. *Hugs*

I’m so sorry to read this! It’s bad enough to have to deal with the diagnosis yourself, but I can’t imagine the pain and worry when it impacts a younger loved one. Best wishes for a positive diagnosis and treatment schedule. It’s amazing how far science and medicine has come with the treatment of all types of cancer.
