I’ve spent the past three days combing through the novel I just finished writing, looking for the things I can fix before handing it off to people who’ll tell me what else needs fixing. It’s been an interesting process, and I must say I think I’m probably crazy as a bedbug. I have made some observations, though, that I thought I’d share. Here goes:
1. I can’t count. It’s going to take me a day to fix all of my chapter numbers. I skipped chapter three right off the bat, accidentally repeated a chapter number to get back on track around chapter 32, but then somehow jumped from 48 to 52 and then to 57. And, friends, I used to teach math.
2. Sometimes I crack myself up. Hopefully I’ll crack others up, as well, otherwise this story won’t work.
3. Some parts of my story make me cry. That’s good, right?
4. I use the word “just” too often. Way too often. I blame Nike.
That’s it, so far. I’m sure I should have noticed other stuff, but I’ll leave that to the experts.

You are so funny. Math was a nightmare for me. Especially when it changed from arithmetic to new math. I knew I was done for…and that was just grammar school! My two words of overuse: ‘just’ and ‘so.’ Yeah, I blame Nike, too….

Thank you. I just didn’t realize how many times I’d used the word “just” until I asked my word processing program to find the word. I just laughed so hard. I’m sure I use it too often in my regular speech, as well. I just can’t help it. 😉😉

Oh dinnae worry re chap numbers… I had a book out for ages wi a publisher…sorted when i got my rights.. that had two chap 18s. Both diff chaps. And you have no idea of the times I got told I used the word edge too often either to name but one of my many sins. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Lol! Right now I’m wondering if I need to change the names of 3 characters. I’m not sure if I’m trying to be too clever in making the change or if it’s something that would make a real difference in the feel of the story.

Math used to be my best subject. I even contemplated a university career. But now? It’s all in the past, so don’t worry 🙂

I once did a post way back called the Importance of being Ardent. And yep, it was about character names. Originally that hero’s dead brother was called Thomas or something and I changed it and you know the second I did he became this right wee, ardent prig that totally added to the hero never ever wanting to be anything like that now he was lord of that particular manner. So you shouldn’t worry. I have already changed the heroine’s name in this new wip and the hero’s possible real surname, that of another secondary and the name of the house. Names are one of the most important thing you can give ANY character or place.

I was a little amazed at the things I saw when going through my first full read through after typing “the end”. Some of the biggest were the words I tended to repeat, apparently one of my biggest bad habits. It gets even more fun when you get others pointing things out. I loved those “how in the world did I miss THAT?!” moments! Have fun with it!

Yes, with the word “just.” Same here. Another one to look for is “that.” Often that is a word that can be left out. 😉
