I grew up in the small Texas town of Floydada. My parents were Baptists, my maternal grandparents were Baptists, my great grandfather was a Baptist minister. So of course, I was Baptist. Honestly I knew of only two other choices: Methodist and Pentecostal. Like I said, it was a small town.
The Baptist church shaped much of my life, and while it isn’t perfect, being comprised of human beings with all their prejudices, frailties, and hang ups, it taught me many good things: Love one another, do unto others as you would have others do unto you, and God is love, among other things. Too bad it’s become so political these days. I no longer think of myself as Baptist.
But the hymns! Oh my goodness did I love the hymns. Modern day worship music doesn’t come close to matching the hymns of my youth. Among my favorites was the hymn, Love Lifted Me. It’s so uplifting, so happy. It transcends denomination and religion.
While there were several versions offered in my google search, none of them quite lived up to my memories of the song, but at least Alan Jackson did a reasonably good job of singing it.
Peace, and love, people.
your are blessed with inspiration, amen

I am a fallen away Catholic but my favorite thing about Catholicism was the Mass. I found it peaceful. I enjoyed the songs most especially when we sang them in Latin. There was something very special about that. I think I might find the Mass a great relief to anxiety. The nuns from back when I was in grade school were skeery! I think they traumatized my childhood… Ha! I was an only an they didn’t like that at all!

I have been thinking about going back. I need it in my life right now. I always enjoyed going to the Catholic church on Venice Island.

The last two times I’ve been to mass it was here in Havana, FL. My housekeeper was married there in October and then her daughter celebrated her quinceñera (sp?) there in December. Mass was celebrated in Spanish, but I could still (mostly) follow along. I’ll have to dig up my post about the wedding.

That’s beautiful, but my little church music director led us in an up tempo version. It was energizing.

You know I was borned and raised in Wise County, Texas, but I was baptised and raised in The Church of Christ. We sang this song in church and it reminds me of my grandma who we called Ma Kate. Thanks for the memories!

My son lives in Dallas and his ex-wife and kids live in Wylie.

I know where Wylie is and of course Dallas. Dallas is a small metropolitan town with a few people in it. When I was a senior in high school, I worked at the DFW airport. That would have been 1984.

Yes it is! LMAO! Hell, Big Tex at the state fairgrounds is bigger than some towns in Texas. I think I might have to write a story about him. See, there’s inspiration for you!

You definitely should! I’ve never gotten to go to the Texas state fair. Someday….

It’s quite something. It’s been a while since I went. Maybe we could plan a trip together. What a hoot that would be. I could see my sister & her family and a bunch of my cousins.

I keep meaning to tell you that my mother-in-law was a Parker (kin to Fess Parker). If our second child had been a boy we’d have named him Parker. It’s the best name.
