My Quest:
Find and purchase copies of the Harry Potter novels
Criteria:
- Hard cover in excellent condition
- Purchase in order of publication
- Purchase only from estate sales, garage sales, or secondhand stores
- Purchase only one book at a time
Purpose:
To replace a mismatched set of Harry Potter books that I donated to a school library several years ago
Justification:
I’m a crazy person with way too much time on my hands.
Current Status:
After several weeks of searching I located book three at an estate sale in Tallahassee. I can’t explain how happy that makes me.
Fun Side Note:
Refrain from trying to explain to anyone at a estate sale or garage sale or secondhand shop what I’m doing. People look at me like I’m annoying or crazy or both..
Peace, people!
You are such a Muggle

Unfortunately, yes. I’ve given up on receiving my letter from Hogwarts.

Second hand stores… does that include online used book sites? If so, I buy so many used books from Thriftbooks.com
I know that going that route takes away most of the thrill of the hunt and purchase, but just thought I’d toss the idea out there if you need a backup option 😉

I’ve wrestled with that question; however, I think I have to discover them in person. I need to add that to my criteria.

Certainly more fun to discover them in person I would say, but the site is still a dandy for used books should you need to browse for other, everyday reading material!

I’ll remember that. When I was reading the Dark Tower series and came to the last book it wasn’t available on Kindle at that time. I went to Amazon and bought a secondhand copy from them. When it arrived I realized the actual seller had been Goodwill. I had no idea Goodwill was in the business of selling books online.

Word of caution about Goodwill. I have found they charge a huge shipping fee. I occasionally look there for kids books even though I can just go to the local store. Once I remember that the shipping is way more than the total of the books, I opt for in person after all!

Do you have a fear of freezing?

No. I never feel the cold at all. I just have this compulsion. But I do pride myself on the fact that unlike in the last house, where our heating bills were more than the mortgage…maybe it is that… that we have not paid halfpenny for either logs or kindling. We get it all off the beach, parks, out on hills, our own trees, our neighbours’, anyone who is chucking out any old furniture in bits. But I think …well…offering to take my younger girl’s neighbour’s half a cut down forest was maybe a bad idea…

I love your Harry Potter scavenger hunt! It just sounds so fun and makes me want to figure out something similar for myself.

Mine began innocently enough when I found the first book at a thrift shop. It was sitting all alone amidst a bunch of weird stuff, like a ceramic Jesus and a few Elvises. That seemed somehow like an omen.

A noble pursuit for sure; and I can definitely appreciate the desire to get one in person rather than finding a copy online. It’s the journey, of course. – Marty

Whatever floats your boat, I say. I love the “rules” you’ve put on your hunt… it just makes it more fun and satisfying when you’ve achieved your goal.

Thanks! I want to draw it out as long as possible. The tension is delicious.
