Day 20 is brought to you by spices! All 20 of these spices expired ages ago. Some as far back as 2015!
At least three of the jars pictured above contain sage. I use sage once or twice a year to season the cornbread dressing that serves as a staple of our holiday meals. Every year I purchase a new container of sage, using perhaps two or three tablespoons for the recipe. So these expired containers were practically full. What a waste, but dressing without sage is blah fare, indeed.
On the plus side, I just opened up a big space in my spice cabinet!
Peace, people!
My spice cabinet looks similar. I don’t know why this happens.

Maybe if I cooked more….

Cleaning the spice drawer is up there on my list of de-cluttering chores. I have the same thing happen with duplicates.

I’m generally not wasteful, so I’ve got to find a better way to buy my sage.

My goal for 2018 is the purge unnecessary things and feel like I have my live together. I love your posts and hope to be able to go through them all de-clutter those areas.

Thanks, Emma. This challenge has been something I’ve needed for a long time. And doing a little bit every day has simplified the process. The best part, though, is that since starting it I haven’t bought anything (other than my motorcycle) that is merely a “want”. I’ve been tempted but I look at stuff more critically. So far, so good.

Right…okay….. Is this why all the contents of my herb cupboard land on top of the kitchen worksurface every time I open the door? I never thought I was guilty of hoarding. Ahem. Sage? I do use Sage. I use it every other week to make Chicken Schnitzel.

How does one make chicken schnitzel?

I just ,ix up breadcrumbs, sage, pepper and garlic powder, dip the chicken filet and fry it up.

Whatever kind of vinegar the recipe required, I bought it, and like your sage, used it only once or twice. When we got together again and moved to our own home, Jackie chucked all my vinegars away. A bit harsh, I thought 🙂

It’s a shame one can’t buy just enough of a spice or a vinegar for one or two recipes!

think of how much more sage you could buy 😛 Seriously though I just did the same thing recently. A terrible waste isn’t it?

When my wife moved into my post-divorce bachelor apartment, she was shocked at the amount of onion powder I had. It must have been at least seven or eight jars! – Marty

That’s an odd addiction, Marty. 😜

Throwing almost-full spice jars away is painful. Fortunately, we have a market close to us that sells spices by whatever amount you need. Basil, I could buy in bulk. Sage, by the pinch.

Now that’s a good idea! I’ll see if that’s an option here!

Our local Sprouts, as well as Penzeys Spices does this where I live (not the bigger grocery stores). Good luck!

We don’t have Sprouts, but we have a local co-op that might do this. It’s worth a try. Thanks!

Now I feel like I need to go throw my spice cabinet. I’m sure I have so much expired ones I never use as well. What a waste.
