It’s heartbreaking to consider all of the dairy products and frozen goods that had to be discarded after the hurricane left Tallahassee without power for two days.
I snapped this one at the WalMart on Tennessee Sunday afternoon. Let’s call it, “Crying Over Spoilt Milk.”
oh wow, thats one photo that say’s it all

I’m in the USA right now and I get lost in your huge mega-supermarkets. I’ve been wondering anyway what on earth they do with all the super (exagerated?) abundance of fresh products they eventually don’t sell in time … ? The idea of all that wast is hair-raising!

Some supermarkets donate their slightly out of date produce to soup kitchens and organizations like Second Harvest, but a good deal of it is just tossed. It’s a crime, or should be.

I agree. Might sound trite, but there are millions in the world dying of hunger. We are so so lucky but also somehow … guilty? of overabundance and resulting waste.

A few chains have taken action, but not nearly enough.

Well, it’s something anyway. Just a few months ago, the Italian government passed some law or other to offer chains and restaurants incentives to deal with redistribution or at least composting. And also to promote doggy-bags that aren’t at all part of the Italian culture đŸ™‚

A good many restaurants in big cities donate all of their edible waste to groups like Second Harvest. At least we are growing more aware of the issue.

And let’s do our bit in spreading awareness!
